In a bold statement on Sunday, a senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump alleged that India is indirectly supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine by continuing to purchase oil from Moscow — a move that has drawn sharp criticism from the Trump camp.
Stephen Miller, who served as Trump’s deputy chief of staff and remains one of his closest confidants, stated during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures that the U.S. cannot allow India to help finance Russia’s military aggression through its energy imports.
“President Trump made it very clear: It’s unacceptable for India to keep buying oil from Russia and indirectly fund the war in Ukraine,” Miller said.
Miller’s remarks mark one of the most pointed critiques of India from the Trump administration — particularly significant given India’s strategic importance in the Indo-Pacific region and its status as a long-standing U.S. ally.
“Most people don’t realize this, but India is nearly on par with China in terms of Russian oil imports. That’s a shocking reality,” Miller added.
Despite these warnings, Indian government insiders told Reuters over the weekend that New Delhi will not halt its oil trade with Russia, even in the face of American disapproval. The Indian Embassy in Washington did not offer a comment in response.
The U.S. responded with economic measures, imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting Friday. This action follows India’s ongoing defense and energy dealings with Moscow. Trump has further warned that the U.S. could place 100% tariffs on imports from nations continuing to engage in oil trade with Russia — unless a significant peace agreement is reached between Moscow and Kyiv.
While delivering this sharp rebuke, Miller also highlighted Trump’s diplomatic rapport with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing their relationship as “tremendous,” suggesting that there is still space for cooperation despite growing tensions.
